Nacho does not allow for rushed sightseeing. Firstly it takes about two travel days to get there. Once at Nacho, the resplendent natural surroundings are so unique they demand time from travellers to not just enjoy the sights, but also soak in the magical environment. So, ‘travel slow’.

The local population of each destination have called it home for centuries, if not millennia. Each of these places practice unique customs and traditions. Respecting and participating in them will not only enhance your experience, but will also encourage them to maintain these practices. At all costs, avoid them. They post the greatest danger to our planet. Carry your own water bottles, for instance, or if you are forced to buy bottled water, try to re-use them as much as possible. At the least, dispose them responsibly.

Tagin Tribe and Indigenous Practices:

  • The Tagin people are the primary indigenous community in Nacho.
  • Their religion, Sidonyism, centers around the worship of nature and elements like the earth (“Si”) and the sun (“Donyi”).
  • They practice animism and their priest is referred to as a “Nyibu.”

Cultural Highlights:

  • Traditional kitchens are uniquely decorated with hunting objects like horns and skulls of Mithun, Takin, and deer.
  • The hearth (“Mering”), bamboo baskets (“Byok”), lofts for storage (“Raakh”), and bamboo-made ceilings (“Naka”) showcase their traditional architectural and functional designs.
  • The Tagins are skilled at weaving their own clothes using back-strap looms. Their primary attire is in shades of red and maroon, which symbolize their identity.

Festivals

  • The Si-Donyi Festival is a major cultural event celebrated annually from January 4th to 6th. It involves rituals to ensure the well-being of living beings (plants, animals, and humans) by worshiping the earth and the sun.
  • The festival is accompanied by food stalls, cultural displays, and traditional dances.

How to reach Nacho

    Air: Dibrugarh in Assam is the nearest airport at 375km. A 15-16hour journey via Aalo and Daporijo takes you to Nacho. Holongi Airport at Itanagar is 304km away, via Ziro, and Daporijo. Brace for long journeys across a mountainous terrain. Keep enough stock of water and snacks for the journey. A weekly Helicopter service from Naharlagun is also available on advance reservation.

    Road: Travelling to Nacho means long hours on the road. It takes about 15-16 hours from Itanagar or Dibrugarh in Assam, where the nearest airport is.

    Best Time To Visit

      The best months to visit Nacho are from November to May when the sun shines at its glorious best. Rains are heavy between May and September.

      Things To Pack

      At about 6000 feet above Mean Sea Level, the air is think and has a nip. While days are quite pleasant, nights can see temperatures dip. Winter months also see light snowfall in the region. Consider carrying warm clothes, comfortable shoes for walks / treks / sports. It will be good to carry your own water bottle, snacks for long journeys on the road, sunscreen lotions and other medication and first aid kits as required.

      Stays

      Nacho currently has a Government Circuit House and an Inpsection Bungalow with XX rooms and a mess hall. While about five homestays are operational at Nacho, more homestays are at Daporijo, 65km away. It is recommended to choose a suitable homestay accommodation unit at Daporijo. Travellers are advised to plan trips to Nacho accordingly, as travel after nightfall is not advised.
